Normally,
you would only visit Kees Park on a bright sunny day ... but during the
holidays, nighttime is when Kees Park is really bright! Thru Christmas,
the Motherhood Statue area of Kees Park is lighted with decorations for
the whole family. With new lights adorning Main Street downtown, many
lights that previously were by the river, are now more viewable form Kees
Park. The Motherhood Statue area is fenced in for the safety of our
children, so bring your cameras for this unbelievable display. (Click on picture for larger view.)
Friday,
December 7th, 2001 was a great night for the City of Pineville, as one of
the largest crowds to ever witness our Annual Christmas parade, lined the
streets of Downtown Pineville. With close to 200 entries and new Christmas
decorations along the way, Main Street never looked so bright! Thanks to
Parade Coordinator Debbie Dion, Public Works Director Charlie
Moore, Recreations Director Rickey Robison and the many
volunteers who helped make it a huge success. Special thanks to the
Pineville Police Department for excellent crowd control, and to our two
Grand Marshals ... World War II Veterans Walter Chenore and Loren
Willet ... and most of all, to the great citizens of Pineville, whose
Patriotism and Christmas spirit is alive and well! (Click on picture for larger view.)
The
City of Pineville is pleased to welcome a new shopping center to town. The
Spectra Group of Memphis, Tennessee is building an 8-store strip mall
adjacent to Pineville's Wal-Mart SuperCenter. Developer Jeff Farmer
(pictured far right) showed Pineville Mayor Clarence Fields and
Assistant Rich Dupree plans for the 32,000 square foot shopping
space that will include a shoe store, women's fashion store, a card shop,
a tuxedo rental shop, cell phone outlet and a new Mexican restaurant. At
least 60-new jobs will be created by the development, with more than
$9-million a year in sales expected to benefit the local economy.
Projected opening is scheduled by late spring or early summer. (Click on picture for larger view.)
The
City of Pineville has announced two very distinguished World War II
veterans will serve as Grand Marshals for this year's 2001 Christmas
Parade. Walter Chenore (next to Mayor Fields) and Loren
Willet (next to Councilman Jack Wainwright) were selected by
Mayor Fields to head this year's parade as a reminder to our city that the
freedoms we enjoy came at a price. Mr. Chenore was aboard the USS
Enterprise in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked December 7th, 1941. This
year's parade will mark the 60th Anniversary of that dreaded attack. Mr.
Willet was a member of the 42nd "Rainbow" Infantry Division that
was in France when WW II ended in May of 1945. Both men are Purple Heart
recipients and residents of Pineville, and the City of Pineville is proud
to have these men lead us once again. (Click on picture for larger view.)
The
Pineville Downtown Development District and Pineville Mayor
Clarence Fields met recently with merchants from Main Street in
Pineville, to discuss decorating their downtown businesses for Christmas.
The PDDD voted to give $500.00 to help pay for a trophy for the best
decorations, which can include storefront window displays to outward
decorating of homes and businesses.
Pineville's Annual Christmas Parade will roll down Main Street Friday, December 7th, at 7:00 pm and everyone in attendance wanted Pineville to really shine on this night. Pictured from right is Mayor Fields (standing), District President Sue Miller, and Commissioners Horace Austin, Tom David, Frank McClammey, Jackie Loyd, and Diana Hasselman.
Mayor Fields also announced bids on the new and much anticipated KCS Underpass will go out December 19th in Baton Rouge, and that the new OMV office on Main Street was on course for completion by March of 2002. (Click on picture for larger view.)
At
November's Pineville City Council Meeting, Mayor Clarence Fields
recognized Jerry and Pamela Quinn (pictured at the far right) for
helping the Madison Street Senior Citizens Complex during the
terrible storm of October 13, 2001.
Like many in Pineville that weekend, this group of Seniors were without electricity for over three days. The Quinn's responded heroically with flashlights in hand, cooked and delivered food to the residents of Madison Street during their greatest time of need. Mayor Fields was joined by residents of the area and others in attendance in applauding the Quinn's for being good neighbors.
