Pineville Girls win 4A Title!

Pineville High Girls Take State!The Pineville High School girls track team took care of business by winning the Class 4A state championship! This is the first girls Track and Field State Championship in the history of Pineville High! The team is led by Head Coach Billy Jones and Assistant Coach Jackie Laborde Monkhouse. The team members are: Carey Carruth, Brittani Gaston, Jess Loyd, Joy Loyd, Brigette Neely, Ayana Slaughter, Kalieste Thomas and Courtney Tolbert. Two of the team members were state champions in their own division: Joy Loyd (High Jump) and Ayana Slaughter (Discus and Shot Put). With nine seniors competing in 11 events, the Rebels collected three individual titles, two second-place finishes, five third-places, two fifth-places and one sixth-place finish.

At the May 14 City Council meeting, Mayor Clarence Fields recognized the team and their accomplishment. Each participant received a certificate of recognition from the City of Pineville. For more in depth coverage here's a link to the article in the Town Talk.


Peace Officers' Memorial Day &
Police Week

Police WeekPineville Mayor Clarence Fields (center) presented a proclamation to Sgt. Darrell Basco (left) and Police Chief Stanley Rogers (right) at the May 14 City Council meeting in honor of Peace Officers' Memorial Day and Police Week. The proclamation reads:

WHEREAS the police officers of America have worked devotedly and selflessly in behalf of the people of this Nation, regardless of the peril or hazard to themselves; and

WHEREAS these officers have safeguarded the lives and property of their fellow Americans; and

WHEREAS by the enforcement of our laws, these same officers have given our country internal freedom from fear of violence and civil disorder that is presently affecting other nations; and

WHEREAS these men and women by their patriotic service and their dedicated efforts have earned the gratitude of the Republic, 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Clarence R. Fields, Mayor of Pineville, do hereby proclaim May 15, 2002 as "PEACE OFFICERS' MEMORIAL DAY" and the week of May 15, 2002 as "POLICE WEEK" in recognition of the service given by the men and women who, night and day, stand guard in our communities and urge the people of Pineville to observe such day and week with appropriate ceremonies and activities.


Birthdays and Anniversaries

At the May 14th City Council meeting Councilman Jack Wainwright made a motion that was voted on unanimously to recognize and congratulate Pineville's Finance Director Kim Portier on the occasion of her birthday the same day as the meeting. Mayor Fields took advantage of the opportunity to congratulate Councilman Wainwright and his wife Peggy on the occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniversary which they celebrated on May 9. Congratulations all around!


National Day of Prayer

National Day of Prayer - Mayors and Ministers Prayer BreakfastPineville Mayor Clarence Fields and Alexandria Mayor Ned Randolph co-hosted a Mayors and Ministers Prayer Breakfast, along with the Evangelical Pastors' Fellowship of Central Louisiana on the National Day of Prayer, Thursday May 2. Five mayors from Central Louisiana participated in person (3 other mayors sent written greetings) along with approximately area 50 pastors. The mayors brought greetings and shared  their concerns for their cities. At the close of the breakfast the pastors gathered around the mayors to pray for them in a sign of support. This is the second annual event hosted by Pineville and Alexandria.


Pineville Advances to State!

Cleanest City Judges 2002Pineville Mayor Clarence Fields is joined by Rapides Parish Police Jury President Bubba Moreau (far right) in welcoming judges for the annual "Cleanest City Contest". Pineville received a near perfect score in advancing to state-wide competition, set for Monday, May 6. Judges commented that Pineville was the cleanest city they had judged thus far. Thanks to everyone who helped our city continue to shine ... including the hard work of the Public Works Department, the Pineville Key Club and the Alexandria Garden Club, who is our sponsor ... and most of all, to our citizens who help keep Pineville beautiful year round. Cleanest City Poster Contest

As the City of Pineville prepares for state-wide judging May 6th in the Cleanest City competition, the "future leaders" of Pineville competed for first place in the 2002 Cleanest City Poster Contest. Third-grader Shandriel Williams of Pineville Elementary won first place (with the poster pictured) and was presented with the blue ribbon, and a certificate of achievement by Pineville Mayor Clarence Fields and City Marshal Larry Jeane, who sponsored the competition. Both city officials listened as organizer Elaine Hicks announced the competition was designed for 5th-graders, but Shandriel didn't realize that when she entered the contest, and took home the top prize. Deoin Knight and Tyler Davis of J.S. Slocum Elementary tied for second. T'Nae Forehand of Slocum won third place. Sara Touchet and Jessica Branton of Slocum tied for fourth. All participants recieved a ribbon and recognition, with their posters currently on display at Pineville City Hall. (Click on pictures for larger view.) Tree City USA

Tree City USA Plaque 2002The City of Pineville has been named a Tree City USA, a designation from the National Arbor Day Foundation in recognition of its commitment to an effective, ongoing community forestry program. Tree City USA 2002The official presentation of this national designation came at the city's Tree Board planting event March 26th, at Huey P. Long Hospital. The first project of the newly-appointed board was to landscape the two islands of the boulevard leading from Main Street to the hospital. The Cleco Corporation awarded a community grant to the Pineville Tree Board to purchase three live oak trees and 48 crepe myrtles for the project. Pineville City officials on hand to receive the national designation (pictured left to right) were Mayor Clarence Fields, City Council members Jack Wainwright, Carol Cunningham and Carrie Broussard, Downtown Development District Chairwoman Sue Miller, and Tree Board member Elaine Hicks. New Apartment Complex

Future site of Pine Trace apartment complexThe City of Pineville will soon welcome another 128-units to it's residential offerings, as the Pine Trace Apartments will begin construction on Highway 28 East. Land is now being cleared between Stilley Road and Sandifer Road, with two phases containing 64-units each of more affordable housing. Standard Enterprises of Monroe will manage the complex, which will have 32-one bedroom, one bath units; 56 two-bedroom, two-bath units; 32-three-bedroom, two-bath units, and 8 four-bedroom, two-bath units. Proposed monthly rents are $375 for one-bedroom units, $450 for two-bedroom, $520 for three-bedroom and $580 for four-bedroom. The 5.65 million dollar construction project will begin soon, with completion in approximately nine months.
