The
2nd Annual "Fireworks Over Buhlow" was a huge
success! By sundown, the Buhlow Lake compound was packed, as well as
citizens camping out on the hill just below the dairy barn on Central
grounds...plus more people along airport road, and another big gathering
on the hill by Pineville High's football field. Those inside the Buhlow
Lake area were entertained by IMPROV and the HARMON

9:30pm, a tribute to the memory of 9/11 kicked-off a twenty minute
fireworks spectacular. There is no better way to enjoy the celebration of
our nation's independence then by seeing "Fireworks over beautiful
Buhlow Lake". Make plans now for Thursday, July 3rd, 2003, and join
us by the lake for a night for the whole family to enjoy. (Click

taking the oath for his first full term in office. (He was appointed mayor
in December 1999 after Mayor Leo Deslatte resigned and then won the
special election to finish out the 4-year term.) Special music was provided by Rosa
Fields and Jauné Gagnard and a spiritual charge was brought by
Rev. Joshua Joy Dara of Zion Hill Baptist Church in Pineville. A
reception was held in the brand new Pineville High School cafeteria. Over
500 people attended the Inauguration. (Click on pictures

Pineville
Mayor Clarence Fields gave the Commencement Speech to 108 graduates
during Louisiana State University at
Alexandria's Spring Commencement exercises held on May 23. Mayor
Fields challenged the graduates to remember who is in control of their
lives, and that whatever the future holds ... placing God first on your
list of priorities is the best way to plan for their future. Mayor Fields
then joined Chancellor Robert Cavanaugh and Charles Weems,
Chairman of the LSU Board of Supervisors, in presenting the diplomas.

The
Salvation Army Disaster Van
rolled up to Pineville City Hall recently to supply coffee, juice and
donuts to says thanks to some of the same people they work along side of
in a time of need. Pineville Mayor Clarence Fields was joined by
members of the Pineville Fire
Department in presenting a proclamation to Captain Mark Price
and members of the Salvation Army. Captain Price was able to report to
Mayor Fields that their 2001 Annual Report showed they had served 35,000
meals through their Soup Kitchen; provided clothing and house fire
assistance to over 300 families; and Christmas assistance to 1,282
children, 681 families, with 318 food baskets and 8,126 gift packs. The
Salvation Army was indeed true to it's slogan in 2001 ... Changing the
World - One Life at a Time.
It
takes a lot of work, and a lot of hands to construct a new KCS Underpass
... and April 23rd, help came from all parts of the state for the official
start of the $5.1 million improvement to U.S. 165 (Main Street) and the
KCS Underpass in Downtown Pineville. Taking part in the ceremonial
groundbreaking were (pictured from left to right) Pineville City Council
members Carol Cunningham, Carrie Broussard, Jack Wainwright, Kevin
Dorn, and Joe Bishop; State Representative Rick Farrar,
Pineville Mayor Clarence Fields, State Senator Joe McPherson,
DOTD Secretary Gordon Nelson, State Representative Tommy Wright,
Alexandria Mayor Ned Randolph, Chamber Executive Director Elton
Pody, former Mayor Fred Baden, and DOTD District Eight Engineer
Wayne Marchand. (Click on picture for larger view.)
Drainage work and line relocation is now underway, with the eventual
closing of the underpass by early fall, and the hopeful reopening next
spring.
For more photos, see our KCS Groundbreaking Ceremony page.
The new structural steel overpass will be 150’ long and will have a clearance of 16’-8” for motorist. The existing railroad overpass (with a clearance of 11’-4”) will be removed; however, the contractor will maintain rail traffic until the completion of the new structure. Other improvements will see the Main Street - Military Highway - Donahue Ferry - College Boulevard intersection completely redesigned for a safer, less confusing route – with a new traffic signal system.
The
City of Pineville held the Grand Opening of the new Office of Motor
Vehicles building on Monday, April 29 at 10:00. A large crowd gathered to
view the new building and participate in the opening ceremonies, including
Kay Hodges, Commissioner of the State Office of Motor Vehicles. The "Lee
J. Broussard Public Building" is named after former City
Councilman Lee Broussard, who served for more than 20 years on the
Pineville City Council after working 32 years for the state Department of Motor Vehicles. This building is a result of city and state
cooperation. The state has signed a long-term lease that will pay for the
building. Downtown Pineville will benefit greatly from the increased
traffic. For more pictures from the Grand Opening, click here.
