"Carrie"ing On ...

Carrie Broussard - District 5The Pineville City Council appointed Carrie Francis Broussard (pictured at right - click to enlarge) to the District 5 council seat vacated by the untimely death of Councilman Randy King. Councilwoman Broussard was previously appointed to the District 5 seat in 2000 when her husband, Lee J. Broussard passed away while in office after having served as City Councilman since 1978. Councilwoman Broussard went on to run for election and was elected to fill out the term in the October 7, 2000 special election. Having completed her late husband's full term she endorsed Randy King, a close family friend who was elected to the seat in the April 2002 general election.

Carrie Broussard being sworn inOnce again the City Council has called on "Miss Carrie" (as she is affectionately called by  many) to fill in the gap during a difficult time. Councilwoman Broussard was sworn in during the March 11, 2003 City Council meeting by Pineville City Judge (retired) Jack Holt and the Bible was held by Mrs. Broussard's daughter, Faith Wilkes of Natchitoches. Pineville Shows Support

The City of Pineville is showing its support for our troops by tying yellow ribbons to utility posts to remind citizens daily to remember and pray. Pineville Mayor Clarence Fields enlisted the cadets of the Youth Challenge Program at Camp Beauregard to assist in the task. Yellow ribbons have been placed down the Pineville Business District stretching from the Gillis Long Bridge to the intersection of Military Highway and Highway 165. Mayor Fields also asked citizens to utilize their owns trees and posts to express support for troops abroad, and their families that are here at home. Camp Beauregard in Pineville has been a buzz of activity as companies are deployed regularly in support of the ongoing efforts to protect the United States interests at home and around the world.

Underpass Update:

The City of Pineville may "finally see the light at the end of the tunnel and it's not a train"... just a train underpass. Progress is continuing on the KCS Underpass on Main Street in downtown Pineville. Sections of the new railroad bridge are now in place, and the new drainage and utility relocates are complete. Although there is much work still to be done on the rebuilding of the road and underpass, construction work is on schedule in spite of the "rainy days" of winter. Merrick Construction hopes to have the underpass open to "thru traffic" by the end of summer ... with a ribbon cutting ceremony for the completed project by the end of the year.

The message of the year-long celebration of the Louisiana Purchase Bicentennial will be heard by more than just Louisianans. A beautifully decorated tour bus made its way to Pineville High School January 9th, and will soon hit the road. People across the country will get a taste of Louisiana's culture later this month, when the Louisiana Purchase Bicentennial Bus Tour begins.

Representatives of the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism will travel on a custom-decorated bus to cities in Minnesota, Kansas, Arkansas, Iowa, Tennessee and Texas. The bus features scenes from across Louisiana, including New Orleans Jazz and Front Street in Natchitoches. You’ll also find the faces of President Thomas Jefferson and Napoleon Bonaparte, two key figures in the biggest real estate deal in history. (Pictured in front of those two faces are Renee Craft co-chair of the local celebration, Alexandria Mayor Ned Randolph, Phillip Jones, secretary of the CRT, Pineville Mayor Clarence Fields, and Rich Dupree, co-chair with Craft on the Central Louisiana celebration).

The tour will feature jazz bands, historic re-enactors and Mardi Gras presentations, and projections have 250 millions visitors to Louisiana during the year-long celebration, creating an economic impact of over $9 billion.
