Arbor Day Event Celebrates An Arbor Day event on February 6 celebrated the partnership among federal and municipal entities, business, a school and volunteers to complete phase one of the landscaping plan at the new Pineville Ward 9 Sportsplex. Pineville Mayor Clarence Fields began the event with the reading of a city proclamation. After the formal presentation and remarks, Tioga High School FFA students planted nearly five hundred long leaf and special loblolly pine seedlings donated by the USDA Forest Service, Southern Research Station in Pineville.
The Pineville Tree Board is spearheading the sports complex landscaping project. Darren Green, a member of the Tree Board and licensed landscape architect, drew the extensive plan that will ultimately landscape the entire 165 acres of the sports complex. The first phase began with landscaping the complex entrance sign. Cleco Power LLC
sponsored that project that includes oak and magnolia trees, grasses and shrubs to highlight the beautiful sign. The City of Pineville poured a concrete apron around the flag court and planted large crape myrtles in the parking lot.
“It is so exciting to see this project kicked off in such a collaborative way,” said Cindy Bouchie (pictured above with Mayor Fields), Cleco right of way agent and chair of the Pineville Tree Board. “It may take many years to completely landscape this beautiful sports complex, but we’ve started with a bang that includes partners from many different aspects of the community. And it’s especially exciting to plant these special seedlings that may give researchers insight for years to come about how to battle pine beetles.”
